Associate Professor Anne McNeilly joined Ryerson University’s School of Journalism after more than 25 years as a journalist, including 18 years as an editor for The Globe and Mail and eight years prior to that as a reporter for The Ottawa Citizen and The Waterloo Region Record.  She held a variety of positions at The Globe, including copy chief and assistant national editor.  In 2000, she joined a six-member team that launched the paper’s new Focus section. Her research interests include the impact of technology on students’ use of language and communication.  She recently returned from a guest position at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, where freedom of expression faces increasing restraints under President Xi Jinping.

Human Rights and Compelled Speech

The broad-shouldered man sitting in a front-row chair leaned over and looked fiercely at me.  “I’m a mean guy.” He looked as though he could snap logs in half with his bare hands. When I unexpectedly laughed, his features softened. He said he was also a “helper,” attending what was advertised recently as a “compelled speech” panel, in case security needed support dealing with protesters.  He pointed to the security men, who were wearing suits but standing alertly, at each corner of the large auditorium packed with more than 700 people.

Journalism Ethics 101 in China

Teaching a news “ethics” course in the fledgling journalism program at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, proved to be a challenge, given the restraints on freedom of expression now occurring under the regime of President Xi Jinping. It was only April, but I could feel the sweat trickling down my neck in the oppressive heat in Guangzhou - a city of 12 million about two hours north of Hong Kong on the coastal mainland. But the temperature wasn’t why I was sweating.
