“Understanding Academic Freedom in Canada” – CFE’s Newest Publication

Few concepts are as misunderstood as academic freedom. Today, the Centre for Free Expression is publishing James L. Turk’s paper, “Understanding Academic Freedom in Canada” to provide a detailed understanding of academic freedom.  The paper addresses many aspects – academic freedom’s origin, history in Canada, components, and limits. It then looks at issues of academic freedom and social media, respectful workplace policies, and collegial governance.

Todd Kyle Joins the CFE Working Group on Intellectual Freedom

Todd Kyle, CEO of the Brampton Public Library, is joining the Centre for Free Expression’s Working Group on Intellectual Freedom. “Mr. Kyle is a long-time champion of intellectual freedom who brings a wealth of experience from his many leadership roles in the Canadian library world,” said James L. Turk, Director of the Centre for Free Expression. “We are delighted he is joining our working group.”

B.C. government’s short-circuiting citizens from accessing their rights to information earned it the 2021 Code of Silence Provincial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Government Secrecy

British Columbia Premier John Horgan, Minister of Citizens’ Services Lisa Beare, and the provincial government of B.C. have been selected as the 2021 recipients of the Code of Silence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Government Secrecy in the provincial category.

CFE releases new guide for whistleblower protection legislation and policies

The Centre for Free Expression (CFE) is publishing today a detailed guide for evaluating whistleblower protection legislation and policy.  Titled Evaluation Criteria for Protection of Whistleblowers. the guide is a tool for evaluating the adequacy of arrangements by governments and private sector organizations for enabling reporting on concerns about organizational wrongdoing or other information important for the public interest.
