Todd Kyle Joins the CFE Working Group on Intellectual Freedom

Todd Kyle, CEO of the Brampton Public Library, is joining the Centre for Free Expression’s Working Group on Intellectual Freedom.

“Mr. Kyle is a long-time champion of intellectual freedom who brings a wealth of experience from his many leadership roles in the Canadian library world,” said James L. Turk, Director of the Centre for Free Expression. “We are delighted he is joining our working group.”

As CEO of the Brampton Public Library, Mr. Kyle  heads a network of eight branches serving a population of over 700,000. He is passionate about the role of libraries in serving diverse communities, fostering digital equity, and facilitating informed and free exchange of ideas. An experienced library and literature advocate, he is the immediate past Chair of the Canadian Federation of Library Associations. He has served as President of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and of the Ontario Library Association.  

Mr. Kyle began his career in several roles with the Mississauga Library System, overseeing the opening of the Churchill Meadows Branch in 2007, after which he spent 11 years as CEO of Newmarket Public Library. In 2006 he was named OLA’s Children’s Librarian of the Year. 

The other members of the CFE Working Group on Intellectual Freedom are: Richard Beaudry , Chair, CFLA Intellectual Freedom Committee;  Christina de Castell, Chief Librarian, Vancouver Public Library; Carla Graebner, Librarian for Data Services and Government Information, Simon Fraser University Library; Pilar Martinez, CEO, Edmonton Public Library;   Shawn Mitchell, Acting Director, Collections and Membership Service, Toronto Public Library; Erin Patterson, Head, Research Services, Acadia University Library;  Toni Samek, Professor and past Chair, School of Library and Information Studies University of Alberta;  Sabrina Saunders, CEO Blue Mountain Public Library and President of the Ontario Library Association; Mark Williams, Chief Librarian and CEO, Milton Public Library.

The Centre for Free Expression at Ryerson University is a hub for public education, research and advocacy on free expression and the public’s right to know. Its work is undertaken in collaboration with academic and community-based organizations across Canada and internationally.
