BPC Bulletin: Proposed Shortening of Poetry Book Provokes Mi'kmaw Poet

News Reports and Commentary Selected by Franklin Carter of the Book and Periodical Council’s Freedom of Expression Committee.

In Nova Scotia, the Department of Education and Rebecca Thomas, a Mi’kmaw poet, have clashed over the proposed publication of a school edition of her poems.

Thomas is the author of I Place You into the Fire. This book includes poetry about her life as a second-generation Indian residential school survivor.

The Department of Education asked Thomas’s publisher to produce a school edition of the book but also asked for the removal of six poems. Thomas objected.
