The deal between Google-affiliate Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto for a ‘smart city’ district on waterfront lands raises serious public issues about who will govern the massive amount of data generated from the integral surveillance proposed. Issues go beyond just privacy. How can we collectively ensure parameters for this and other “smart city” projects be set and controlled publicly, not by private sector interests? What should those data governance parameters be. Join three public experts and advocates for a lively discussion about our immediate future.
